Healthy Human Food Toppers for Your Dog’s Kibble or Cold-Pressed Meals
We all love to treat our dogs and It makes us all sad to think that some dogs may eat the same bowl of kibble everyday so a sprinkle of safe, fresh human foods on top add variety, extra nutrients, hydration, and excitement without turning mealtime into a full home-cooked adventure (for those who dont want to cook or prepare). We all appreciate the convenience of pre prepared dog food, just make sure the base of the meal is a high quality cold pressed or very high quality Kibble. It must contain Taurine amongst other essential nutrients, we feed Wilsons Cold Pressed or Wellness Core Kibble both containing brilliant ingredients and Taurine essential for digestion and has many other benefits.
Ideally introduce one new topper at a time, watch for any tummy upset, and check with your vet first if your dog has allergies but side effects to these toppers im suggesting are rare. Two types of Human food options are raw toppers (no cooking required) and cooked toppers (lightly prepared for better digestibility). All are dog-safe when served plain, washed and in moderation. Something different in each meal for extra goodness!
Raw Toppers: Fresh, Fast, and Nutrient-Packed. These go straight from fridge or counter to bowl. Chop or grate into bite-sized pieces.
🐾Blueberries are tiny antioxidants loaded with vitamins C and K, manganese, and fiber. They support brain health, fight inflammation, and promote urinary tract health. A handful (5–10 berries) is plenty and if you buy frozen they are a great addition, especially in the summer.
🐾Cucumber as its 95% water, so it’s an excellent hydrator. Low-calorie, crunchy, and rich in vitamins K, C, and B. Slice into thin rounds or sticks—great for overweight pups.
If hydration is a worry you can add Bone Broth to any meal.
🐾Grated Carrots for Beta-carotene (which turns into vitamin A) for healthy skin, coat, and vision. The fiber aids digestion, and the natural crunch (if larger pieces or a whole carrot chew) helps scrape tartar off teeth. Grate them fresh so they stay juicy and easy to mix into food.
🐾Apple slices (cored, no seeds or stem) add Vitamins A and C plus pectin fiber for gut health. The crisp texture is fun to chew and freshens breath naturally. Helps digestion!
🐾Strawberries (hulled) Vitamin C, manganese, and antioxidants that support the immune system.
🐾Celery sticks (cut small) low-calorie, high-water crunch with vitamins A, K, and folate. Helps freshen breath and provides fiber. I give it to the dogs but not for me, I hate it 🤪
Quick tip for raw toppers:
🐶Wash everything
🐶Organic is ideal
🐶 Pin a list of your top, safe, regular buys to your fridge so its an easy grab to boost their meals.
Cooked Toppers: Warm, Digestible, and Soothing. Light steaming, boiling, or baking (no oil, butter, salt, or spices) makes these veggies softer and easier on the stomach. Mash or cube them small so they blend or mash nicely.
🐾Sweet Potato (baked or steamed, skin removed). A superfood for dogs—packed with vitamins A, B6, and C, plus fiber and antioxidants. Supports digestion, steady energy, and a shiny coat. Mash a small spoonful or cube it and the natural sweetness is irresistible.
🐾Butternut Squash (steamed or roasted, skin and seeds removed) high in vitamins A, C, and E, plus potassium and fiber. It’s anti-inflammatory and excellent for eye health and immune support. Its creamy texture mixes beautifully into any meal, most easily steamed or boiled.
🐾Pumpkin (plain canned pumpkin purée, pumpkin powder or freshly steamed)
IF YOU FOLLOW MY BLOG YOU KNOW IM A BIG FAN!
The gold standard for tummy troubles. Soluble fiber helps firm up loose stools and/or ease constipation. Rich in beta-carotene, iron, and vitamins—use 1–2 tablespoons of puree per meal or a teaspoon of powder mixed with water.
We use Canned Pumpkin Puree or a cheaper but just as effective alternative we use Pumpkin Powder 🎃
🐾Steamed Broccoli Florets (chopped small)
Vitamins C and K and antioxidants. The fiber promotes healthy digestion while being low in calories make it great for overweight dogs.
🐾Steamed Green Beans contain high fiber and vitamins A, C, and K. They add bulk without many calories and give a satisfying crunch even after light cooking.
Quick tip for cooked toppers: Cook in plain water or steam until soft. Cool before serving and you can batch-cook and freeze in ice-cube trays for grab-and-go portions or keep in the fridge for a few days after cooking for easy addition to meals.
Remember that toppers should enhance, not replace a balanced complete diet. Start small and adjust based on your dog’s size, age, preference and activity level.
No seasonings, ever!
This is why its not good to treat them with your food. Skip salt, pepper, butter, oils, onions, garlic, or sweetened anything—these are toxic or irritating.
Watch for choking hazards. Cut everything into small, manageable pieces, especially for small breeds or puppies.
AVOID
Avoid grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, avocado, or macadamia nuts (all toxic). If your dog has kidney issues, diabetes, or pancreatitis, some high-fiber or sugary options may need vet approval.
But all in all just adding one or two of these toppers a few times a week can make your dog excited for dinner while sneaking in extra vitamins, fiber, and hydration. Their kibble or cold-pressed meal suddenly becomes a gourmet experience and your dog will thank you.
Got a favorite topper I missed or a picky eater who needs extra convincing? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear what works for you!
