Get your dogs ready for summer

How to Keep Your Dog Cool and Be Ready For Summer

As we hit this heat wave, it reminds us to be prepared for our dogs in the heat. Our Pups need just as much care to stay safe and comfortable as we do. Here’s how to get your Dog ready for summer and keep them happy while temperatures soar.

Dogs don’t sweat like we do. They mainly cool down through panting and the pads on their paws, which makes them more vulnerable to overheating. Watch out for excessive panting, drooling, bright red gums, or slowing down on walks. These are early warning signs that your dog is struggling in the heat and some breeds suffer more, especially the non shedding Dogs! Just this weekend I've seen dogs out when it is too hot for them to be walked and the dogs are sitting down and refusing to move, they have no other way to tell you "Take me home, let me chill out".

At home - Cooling Mats!
One of the best things to have is a cooling mat. These mats stay noticeably cooler than the floor and give your dog a chill spot to lie on. The best ones don’t need water or freezing – just unroll and they’re ready. This Cooling Mat is the one we use, it comes in different sizes and all the dogs here in day-care use it. Pop one in their favourite spot and you’ll notice them using it straight away.
At Home - Hydration Hacks: Bone Broth Powder!
Keeping your dog hydrated is crucial in hot weather. A great option is Bone Broth Powder. It’s packed with electrolytes, which help replace minerals lost. Simply mix a spoonful into their water bowl or food. Sprinkle on food or mix with water and add to their bowl – They love it! It is an easy way to encourage them to drink more and gives them so much goodness they need.

At Home - Enrichment Ideas
When it’s too warm for long walks, mental stimulation keeps them happy. A simple winner is putting frozen blueberries in ice cube trays with a little water. These make perfect cooling treats that take time to eat and keep them entertained. You can also freeze their favourite toys or use a Puzzle Feeder filled with frozen food, berries are my favourite treat to freeze! This one is especially great for filling and freezing keeping your Dog occupied, stimulated and hydrated! You can freeze the Bone Broth in there (i haven't tried that yet, let me know).

Staying proactive means your dog can enjoy summer just as much as you do. A few simple changes make all the difference between stress and a safe, happy Dog. Bone Broth
Cooling Mat - pop in their crate at night time
